Everything goes back to race with this president and his political allies. For once, Obama was sort of making sense (talking about the ‘dangers’ of smoking marijuana), but then he just had to go and bring race into the equation:
The president said he is troubled at the disproportionate number of arrests and imprisonments of minorities for marijuana use. “Middle-class kids don’t get locked up for smoking pot, and poor kids do,” he said. “And African-American kids and Latino kids are more likely to be poor and less likely to have the resources and the support to avoid unduly harsh penalties.”
So, no white people – which is essentially what Obama meant by ‘middle-class kids’ – ever get arrested for smoking and/or possessing marijuana, only the blacks and Latinos. What a crock! The nation’s marijuana laws are a burden upon everyone, not just your favorite pet constituencies, Mr. President! There’s no need, whatsoever, to bring race into this conversation. It is not the government’s place to tell us what we can and cannot put into our bodies, and it really is that simple. Obama’s pro-pot (such as it was) argument merely rests on equivocation – it’s no worse than alcohol – and had nothing to do with the natural & Constitutional limits of governmental power over individuals’ personal decisions. For, we all know that Obama believes government has no limits, and he & his wife have demonstrated time & again they have no issues with telling Americans – especially children – what is and isn’t healthy for them.
