The American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday issued a “travel alert” warning potential visitors to Texas about “the possible violation of their constitutional rights when stopped by law enforcement.”

The alert comes two days after Gov. Greg Abbott signed a controversial new immigration-enforcement law known as SB4 and four months before the law goes into effect.

The law targeted “sanctuary cities” and authorized local law enforcement to investigate immigration status when someone is arrested or detained.

“The law gives a green light to police officers in the state to investigate a person’s immigration status during a routine traffic stop, leading to widespread racial profiling, baseless scrutiny, and illegal arrests of citizens and non-citizens alike presumed to be ‘foreign’ based on how they look or sound,” the ACLU said in a statement.
